Betty Anholt

Published author and island historian Betty Anholt has helped generations of readers, residents, and visitors discover the rich history of Sanibel and Captiva. Through her research, writing, and storytelling, she has brought the islands’ past to life, sharing the stories of the people, places, and events that shaped their distinctive character.

Betty’s exploration of the past also includes anthropological work and participation in archaeological digs. These hands-on experiences complement her historical research, deepening her understanding of the people who inhabited the islands and the traces they left behind.

Her work preserves stories that might otherwise be lost and encourages a deeper appreciation of our shared heritage.

In 2020, the Captiva Island Historical Society established the Guardian of History Award in Betty’s honor and named her its first recipient. As the award’s namesake, she embodies the lifetime commitment to preserving, interpreting, and sharing island history that it celebrates.
