A Childhood Like No Other
—When Growing Up Was an Adventure.
The fourth collaborative production of the Captiva Island Historical Society and the Sanibel Historical Museum & Village, Children of the Islands offers a rare and heartwarming journey through generations of childhood on Sanibel and Captiva—from barefoot children attending one-room schoolhouses to the final years before the causeway transformed the islands’ remote way of life.
Acclaimed documentarian and award-winning broadcast journalist Ken Sneeden combines extensive archival research with moving first-person recollections, preserving the voices of those who experienced this remarkable way of life firsthand. Separated from the mainland, children found freedom and adventure in communities shaped by agriculture, commercial fishing, hard work, resourcefulness and strong family ties.
Featuring rarely seen photographs, historic film footage and unforgettable personal accounts, Children of the Islands captures a vanishing way of life and preserves this important chapter of island history for generations to come.
